This Week’s Groceries and Meals

Next year we’ll have more produce preserved from the garden to use throughout the winter, but this year we don’t have much. So I am focusing on keeping costs down and buying produce that is on sale to keep our meals healthy but low-cost.

This was my first week attempting to plan our meals by what’s on sale at our grocery stores. I shopped at Wegman’s for most of it and then went to Giant on my way home and picked up items that were “buy one get one free” — potatoes, blueberries, Pup-peroni for Charlie, goldfish. My overall savings at Giant were $18.56 and I ended up spending $33.69 after I added in some extra vegetables, dishwashing detergent and the big bag of frozen chicken. Overall a pretty good savings over our normal $120-150 spent weekly on groceries.

This Week’s Grocery List:

Dairy/eggs: Dozen eggs

Meat: 6 lb. club pack of 80% lean ground beef

Frozen: 16 oz. peas, 2.5 lbs. frozen chicken breasts

Pantry: Mott’s apple juice, V8 V-Fusion light peach mango juice, 5 oz. evaporated milk, 14 oz. sweetened condensed milk, 2 8 oz. cans tomato sauce, 1 29 oz. can tomato sauce, canned chickpeas, 2 10 oz. cans of Ro-Tel, 2 bags of goldfish

Produce: 1 lb. organic carrots, 1.25 lb. romaine lettuce, 2.6 lbs. butternut squash, .6 lb. organic spinach, 2 5 lb. bags of russet potatoes, cauliflower, 2 pints blueberries

Household items: Charmin toilet paper (6 big rolls), Scotch gift wrap tape (3 rolls), 2 bags of pupperoni jerky (beef and chicken), dishwashing detergent

  Total Cost: $77.10

This Week’s Meals:

TUESDAY – Homemade ravioli with marinara and salad

WEDNESDAY – Spanish potatoes (twice baked with beef, tomato sauce and cheddar cheese), with broccoli and fruit salad

THURSDAY – Chana masala (chickpeas in a masala sauce), cauliflower and potatoes, rice and peas

FRIDAY – Meatloafy meatballs, mashed potatoes, roasted squash with spinach and raisins

SATURDAY – Jerk chicken, sweet potatoes, teriyaki broccoli, fruit salad

SUNDAY – White wine chicken with leftover mashed potatoes and spinach salad for lunch, then homemade pizza with salad for dinner

MONDAY – Chicken pot pie, salad
